Papers consist primarily of correspondence and financial papers with some estate papers, legal papers, diaries, account books, sketchbooks, insurance policies, custom records, and photographs of Howland siblings Agnes, Blanche, Slocum, Clarence, and Edith. Letters are largely addressed to Slocum from his siblings and concern estate matters, travels, social and family news, art studies, Agnes' painting, Edith's sculptures, financial affairs, property matters including Little Deer Island in Maine, and buying and racing yachts. There are also letters from their aunt Emily Howland (1827-1929), 1901-1915, mostly social chats but also commenting on proposed canal enlargement, her difficulty finding reliable tenant farmers, and the role of spiritual people; and legal papers, financial records, and correspondence of Edith and Clarence Howland concerning the estate of Emily Howland, 1930-1931.

Emily Howland was a Quaker reformer, educator and philanthropist. In the mid 1850s, she was a teacher in a school for African American girls. During the Civil War she helped organize the Freedman's Village at Camp Todd for refugee slaves, where she worked as nurse and teacher. After the war, she opened a school for African Americans.
