Mother Generals/Presidents collection, 1810-1983.

Included are biographical essays, life and career chronologies, diaries, portrait photographs, obituaries, condolence letters and descriptions of funerals, some genealogical notes, holy cards, speeches, and writings on religious topics; correspondence, reports, writings, and clippings generated by their careers as teachers, nurses, and hospital administrators; and reports, correspondence, and memos concerning the administration of the order. A small amount of personal correspondence, and two citizenship certificates (of Mother Regina Lawless, 1867, and Mother Mary Ambrosia Sweeney, 1870) are included. All the Mother Generals (the two most recent ones are called Presidents) are represented. With their terms in office, they are: Elizabeth Boyle, 1846-1849; Mary Jerome Ely (Mary Ann Ely), 1849-1885; Angela Hughes, 1855-1861; Mary Regina Lawless, 1870-1876; Mary Ambrosia Sweeney (Eliza Sweeney), 1885-1891; Mary Rosina Wightman, 1891-1894; Mary Rose Dolan, 1894-1900; Mary Melita McClancy (Ellen T. McClancy), 1900-1906; Mary Josepha Cullen, 1906-1921; Mary Dolores Dunne, 1912-1915; Marie Vincentia McKenna, 1921-1941; Mary Dionysia Howland, 1927-1932; Miriam Regina Walsh (Susan Augustine Walsh), 1932-1935; Mary Josephine Taafe, 1941-1948; Mary Berchmans Reed, 1948-1954; Mary Fuller, 1954-1960; Loretto Bernard Beagan, 1960-1966; Evelyn Schneider, 1966-1971; and President Sister Margaret Dowling, 1971-1979; and President Sister Agnes Connolly, 1979-present.
