Charles West Civil War scrapbooks, 1886-1912.

These scrapbooks, assembled by Charles West, contain newspaper clippings and magazine articles, dated from 1886 to 1912. They are primarily recollections and histories of Civil War campaigns and battles, written long after the end of the war. The publications from which this material is taken are not identified. Also included are information about the naval operations of the Civil War and other material regarding the United States Navy during the nineteenth century, especially regarding the War of 1812 and the naval buildup prior to the Spanish-American War. Many of these Civil War naval articles are part of a series, "A Fortieth Anniversary War Story," and thus were written between 1901 and 1905.

Charles F. West (1864-1947) was employed for many years at the Glens Falls Insurance Company, retiring in 1929. He later served two terms on the City Council of Glens Falls, New York, from 1940-1944. He served on the Glens Falls Board of Education and was a member of the Methodist Church and of the Rotary Club of Glens Falls.
