Papers of Dorothy S. Grant, 1917-1996.

The papers contain extensive autobiographical materials, correspondence, household account books, photographs, slides, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, and speeches documenting Grant's personal life and her extensive activities in civic clubs. Noteworthy for her personal life are her complete records of household expenses from 1932 to 1991, providing a history of one household's budgeting arrangements for sixty years, including during the Depression. A videotaped interview by Marlise Riffel concerns Grant's work on behalf of victims of spousal abuse. The papers also contain materials from three of the organizations Grant belonged to, namely, the Charles Eliot Club, the Supper Club, and the local unit of Planned Parenthood; a complete index of the many speeches she has given since 1923 together with a small selection of those speeches including several about the life and writings of Cedar Falls native, Ruth Suckow; photographs, slides, travel logs, and descriptions of Grant's travels to Columbia, Iran, Norway, and Tahiti; and audiocassettes, newsletters, and writings documenting her life as a member of the Unitarian Universalist Society, showing her many activities at the local, regional, and national levels. Among the writings are two histories on Unitariansim and Universalism in Iowa and Black Hawk County.
