Homemaker and civic activist in Cedar Falls, Iowa, holding office in various organizations, such as the American Association of University Women study group, the Cedar Falls Woman's Club, Girl Scouts, Parents and Teachers Association and others. Grant served as secretary for the local unit of Planned Parenthood from 1937 to 1944. In 1950 the Grants helped organize a Unitarian Fellowship and Dorothy Grant devoted much of her energies for 45 years to serving this
organization by attending state and regional conferences,starting a Sunday school, acting as archivist, and writing manuals and booklets for the Unitarian Universalist Society dealing with the local society and world religions. From 1963 to 1965 Dorothy and Martin Grant lived in Iran where Martin conducted botanical research. On all of his field trips, Dorothy was his unrecognized secretary and assistant,
helping in all aspects of plant collection, preservation, and mounting. In 1967 Grant divorced her husband and returned to the work force, working for the local Head Start program for 4 years, rising to the position of Supervisor of Education. She later worked for the Home Start research program at the University of Northern Iowa, testing the development of pre-school children, and later worked at the University of Northern Iowa Museum, eventually retiring in 1975 at age seventy.
