Born in the Netherlands, Edward Bok came to the United States with his family at the age of six. He worked in publishing from the age of thirteen. He founded the Brooklyn magazine and 1886 he established the Bok Syndicate Press. Bok became editor of Ladies' home journal in 1889. Born in St. Louis in 1862, Reedy served his apprenticeship as a writer on the Missouri Republican, then as a reporter for the Globe-Democrat, and in 1893 became the city editor of the St. Louis Mirror.
