Armarium LIV, [1---].

MacFarlane notes that the contents of this armarium are of fundamental importance for the history of the Great Schism, 1378-1418. Vols. 14-39 are the chancery copies of the actual depositions taken down from the supporters of both Urban VI and Clement VII for the Spanish kings within the first few years of the outbreak of the schism, and many of them are vivid eyewitness accounts of the disputed election of April 8, 1378. Vols. 40-48 are later copies of depositions, besides several short tracts on papal power occasioned by the schism, which take the controversy into the Conciliar period and beyond to Luther. The contents of these so-called Libri de Schismate (vols. 14-48) have been admirably described by M. Seidlmayer, and the whole series has been extensively drawn upon by historians of the Great Schism. According to Boyle, this armarium originally contained forty-eight volumes. Among the thirty-five volumes now in Armarium LIV, there is the Thesaurus historicus (ca. 1750) of Cornelius Margarini (vols. 1-13). There is also material relating to Martin Luther.
