These Indici, located on the 2nd floor of the ASV Sala d'Indici and in the stacks, provide access to the later volumes in the following Secretary Brevium series: Secretaria Brevium (ID VATV201-A), Indulgentiae ad tempus (ID VATV202-A), Indulgentiae perpetuae (VATV203-A), Indulta personalia (ID VATV204-A), and Altare privilegiatum ad tempus (ID VATV205-A), and Altare privilegiatum perpetuum (VATV206-A); and their continuation, Secretariatus Status-Brevi Apostolici (ID VATV167-A). Entries are alphabetical primarily by diocese, but also include religious corporations, institutions, cities, and territories in the alphabetical list. Entries include the number, date of audience, agent, postulant, object of business, rescript date and who issued the rescript (e.g. Propaganda), and selected observations. To retrieve the actual brief the dates are the important pieces of information to note.

The office of secretarius intimus (private secretary) was entrusted by Leo X (1513-1521) to Pietro Ardighello, an assistant to Cardinal Giulio de' Medici (the future Clement VII [1523-1534] and a cousin of Leo X), who took over the direction of foreign affairs dealing with all correspondence in the vernacular, especially with the apostolic nuncios who were entrusted by that time with diplomatic missions of a permanent character.
