The Lilly papers are arranged as follows: 1/Papers of John Lilley, administration of his estate, 1824-1840; 2/Papers of James M. Lilley, 1825-1858; 3/Letters to James M. Lilley, 1823-1837 (1859); 4/Deeds, etc., witnessed by James M. Lilley; 5/Deeds, etc. not obviously connected to the Lilleys, (1743), 1776-1862; 6/Account books and miscellaneous volumes, including a travel journal covering Ohio interspersed with a narrative of family marriages, "Uncle Wright's" children, and directions for cutting a cape for a great coat. The three account books are: 1) Account book of John Lilley, 1813-1818, 2) J.C. Elliott's account book, 1854-1868, and 3) Lilley family account book, 1824-1838 (indexed). The letters from John W. Campbell are particularly literate and one offering advice on readings to prepare for a profession, still has value.

Lilley became postmaster in Lilly, Ohio, and James became a reserve Army colonel. John W. Campbell, jurist and congressman, was James M. Lilley's brother-in-law and mentor.
