Walter Drew McCaw, 1863-1939, was a career Army medical officer. After training at the Medical School of Virginia and Columbia University Medical School, he joined the Army Medical Department in 1884. Claudius Henry Mastin received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1849 and practiced medicine in Mobile, Alabama. During the Civil War he became medical director of the army of the Mississippi. He invented several surgical instruments and contributed largely to medical journals, especially on genito-urinary surgery.
