Orville W. Crowder's Cheasapeake and Ohio Canal collection, 1927-1997.

This collection contains newspaper clippings, newsletters, photographs, maps, guide books, certificates, color slides, reports, pins and other memorabilia and membership cards. The material dates from 1951-1974 and was collected by Crowder in connection with his work relating to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. The bulk of the materials consists of maps of Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Ohio.

The 184-mile Chesapeake and Ohio Canal operated 1850-1925 and is now operated as a national historic park by the National Park Service. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas used his influence to prevent the destruction of the canal. Orville Wright Crowder (1904-1974) was a nature enthusiast working as a historian and guide for the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Association from 1933-1974. His contributions to the association included helping to measure and describe the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, creating various clubs and organizations and leading a daily bird tour. He also helped create, measure and describe the Appalachian trail and founded the World Nature Tours and the World Nature Club. He set foot in all but five countries...
