Letters, 1854-1857.

These records contain three letters addressed to "My Dear Cousin" and presumably are to Mrs. Maria Garnett. They are printed in James M. Garnett, Biographical Sketch of Hon. Charles Fenton Mercer...(Whittet and Shepperson, 1911). In a letter dated Dec. 8, 1854, Paris, Mercer tells of personalities and experiences encountered on a trip to St. Petersburg, in the Soviet Union. A letter dated June 6, 1856 written from London contains reminiscences on his life, education, philosophy of life. It is incomplete. The third letter is dated November 29, 1857, Fairfax Co., Va., contains comments on his recent travels to Tallahassee, Fl., and New Orleans, where he mentions his adopted daughter, Lucy Belton.
