The papers include correspondence, notes, newspaper clippings, subject files, and an autobiography. Topics covered include: workingmen's associations and the beginnings of collective action; the London Corresponding Society and other political societies of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; political events in England between 1830 and 1854, including the Great Reform Bill, the Bristol Riots, and the National Political Union; Westminster politics and elections; the development of workingmen's political associations; trade unions, trade clubs, and the right to strike. Other topics include Canadian political affairs; Poor Law administration; English drama; and manners and morals.
