Jack Henry Abbott (1944-2002) spent most of his life in prison. In 1978 he began a correspondence with author Norman Mailer; his letters describing prison life were published in book form as In the belly of the beast in 1981. Mailer helped to gain Abbott's release, but six weeks later he murdered a 22 year-old aspiring playwright. Abbott was sentenced to 15 years-to-life, and wrote a second book, My return, in 1987.
