Local, national, and international recognition has come to TRC consistently. In 1968, it was the first American theater company to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland. The company received the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theater Company in 1981, produced four television productions for PBS, and toured India and Syria.

TRC has a strong commitment to the development of new works and has presented nearly 50 world premieres. Artistic Director Eustis has a national reputation as both a director and dramaturg; he commissioned Tony Kushner's Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning Angels in America . Trinity's Providence New Plays Festival has presented some of the theater's newest voices to New England audiences. Summer finds TRC actors gathering with playwrights and directors at the Bread Loaf Writer's Colony in Middlebury, Vermont, to write, rehearse, and present workshops of new plays.

From its roots in Providence's Trinity United Methodist Church, TRC moved in 1973 to its present home, the Lederer Theater Center in downtown Providence. Formerly known as the Majestic Theatre, the historic building houses two performance spaces: the 500-plus seat Elizabeth and Malcolm Chace Theater and the 300-seat Sarah and Joseph Dowling, Jr. Theater, as well as offices, production shops, rehearsal halls, and Conservatory studios.

As Rhode Island's largest arts organization, TRC has a significant impact on the community, and is a linchpin of Providence's arts and entertainment district. With an annual budget of $7 million, the theater employs 130 artistic and administrative staff, and generates more than $24 million in economic activity each year. The theater enjoys support from the region's leading corporations as well as the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, The Rhode Island Committee for the Humanities, and the City of Providence.
