The manuscripts, written mostly in Salem, Massachusetts, include poems, sermons, and essays by Jones Very with some poems by Lydia Very and others, and a biographical sketch by James F. Clarke. Notebooks are school exercises by Very. Printed items are newspaper clippings of poems by Very. Includes "Lines on Mt. Auburn" ([Salem, 1833]), a notebook of verses separately accessioned (part of Albert Gorton Greene Memorial).

James Freeman Clarke (April 4, 1810 – June 8, 1888) was an American theologian and author. Lydia Louisa Ann Very was born in Salem, Massachusetts, and taught school there. She published poems in various regional periodicals, and illustrated children's books.
