Poet, academic and teacher. Christopher John Brennan was born in 1870 in Sydney, and died there in 1932. Brennan attended St Ignatius' College, Riverview, and the University of Sydney where he read the classics and philosophy. He graduated with first class honours in 1891 and won a travelling scholarship to study languages at the University of Berlin, 1892-1894. Brennan returned to Australia and became a literary author. His first published works appeared in 1897 with the titles XXI poems 1893-1897: towards the source, and XVIII poems: being the first collection of verse and prose. Brennan joined the teaching staff of the University of Sydney in 1909 and in 1920 was appointed Professor of Comparative Literature and head of the University's department of German and comparative literature. In 1925, however, he was dismissed from his Professorship on the grounds of adultery. Brennan then worked as a teacher of modern languages at St Vincent's College, Potts Point, until the time of his death.
