Founded in 1854, the Virginia Mechanics' Institute was Richmond's night school of technology for the "promotion and encouragement of manufactures, the mechanic and useful arts, and the mental and social improvement of the industrial classes." An act of the General Assembly incorporated the institute on January 12, 1856. The school constructed a building in 1857 which the Confederate government occupied in 1861, and which was destroyed in the 1865 evacuation fire. Economic conditions prevented th...
