Virginia Mechanics' Institute (Richmond, Va.)
Variant namesHide Profile
Founded in 1854, the Virginia Mechanics' Institute was Richmond's night school of technology for the "promotion and encouragement of manufactures, the mechanic and useful arts, and the mental and social improvement of the industrial classes." An act of the General Assembly incorporated the institute on January 12, 1856. The school constructed a building in 1857 which the Confederate government occupied in 1861, and which was destroyed in the 1865 evacuation fire. Economic conditions prevented the reestablishment of the school until 1884. It moved to various locations in Richmond until settling at Broad and 11th Streets in 1902. This property was sold to the city in 1924 and the school moved to larger quarters at 10th and Marshall Streets.
