Orderly books, 1780.

Two manuscript orderly books: v. 1 January-23 April and v. 2 23 April-26 July 1780 of the 2nd Canadian Regiment, kept by Hawkins with headquarters at Morristown. It contains division and brigade orders with lists of camp, main guard and fatigue details and detachments and decriptions of court martials.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
