Natchez Fencibles constitution and list of members, 1827?-1830.

This "Captains Copy" of the Constitution of the Natchez Fencibles contains ten printed pages and six unprinted leaves which contain a manuscript amendment to the Constitution dated Jan. 4, 1830, transcribed from the minutes and signed by William Vannason. The amendment was proposed by Mr. Felix Huston. The volume contains manuscript signatures of members under the headings "Enrolment of members" and "Signatures to the Constitution." Part of the title page is missing. The volume probably belonged to I. J. Hughes.

Founded in 1824, the Natchez Fencibles was the first military company to be organized in Natchez, Mississippi. The company was composed of officers, non-commissioned officers, and privates. Officers were elected by members of the company. The secretary of the company was William Vannason. I. J. Hughes probably served as the company's captain.
