Consists of correspondence with attachments; speeches; writings; manuscripts; drafts (documents); galley proofs; contracts; plans; and printed material, including clippings, reprints, pamphlets, and programs dating from 1914 to 1977, although the bulk dates from the 1930s to the 1960s. The collection documents Henry Merritt Wriston's career as president of Brown University and Lawrence College; his experiences at Wesleyan University; his work in foreign relations including activities with the Council on Foreign Relations and World War II related policy; his work for the American Assembly, and other political, social, and educational institutions; and his publications. Wriston's involvement with Brown University, Wesleyan University, and the Council on Foreign Relations are documented in several series. The bulk of Wriston's Brown University-related papers are in series I and XV. Subjects documented in the Brown Files (I) include athletics; alumni and alumnae affairs; development of the applied mathematics program; commencements; the Corporation; budgets and finance; fund raising; the Graduate School; libraries; Pembroke College; student organizations; and various extra-University organizations such as the Assoc. of American Colleges. Wriston created significant changes in student housing during his administration. Brown's buildings and grounds are documented in the Brown Files series as well as the Buildings and Grounds. (Real Estate) - Fraternities series (XV). Subjects in the latter series include the restoration of the original college edifice, general improvements to buildings and grounds, and the construction of student housing and other buildings. Brown is also documented in the Greetings, Articles, and Book Reviews series (XIII); and the Gifts, Howard Foundation, Miscellaneous series (XIV). The Wesleyan and Lawrence Correspondence series (XII) documents some of Wriston's activities as president of Lawrence College; his relationships with faculty various colleges, including Wesleyan; in Delta Tau Delta; and in political science. The Wesleyan Correspondence series (XIX) reflects Wriston's role as a professor of history and includes discussions of various issues such as athletics and the selection of the Wesleyan president. There is also correspondence related to the Williams College, Institute of Politics. Several other series contain Wesleyan and Lawrence related materials. Speeches by Wriston are primarily documented in series III, V, and VII. The Speech File (V) contains texts of speeches dating from 1914 to 1955; drafts, notes, source materials used for the speeches; and some printed reports related to the speeches. Later speeches are in the Speeches and Articles from August 1955- series (VII). The Correspondence About Speeches series (III) documents requests for Wriston to deliver speeches and reactions to the speeches. Many of the speeches. referred to in series III were about foreign policy and aspects of World War II. Wriston's publications are primarily documented in series IV, VI, VIII, X, and XXII. The Publications series (IV) contains manuscripts, drafts, and other related correspondence. The Book Manuscripts series (X) contains manuscripts, correspondence, book reviews, and other materials including supporting matter, such as speeches and clippings, created in conjunction with the publications of Wriston's books. The bulk of the Greetings, Articles, and Book Reviews series (VIII) consists of manuscripts and related correspondence for publications by Wriston that reflect his work at Brown University, in education in general, and in foreign relations, including his affiliation with the Council on Foreign Relations. Topics treated in the writings include commentary about U.S. politics and foreign affairs, especially World War II related topics; and military service. Series VIII documents Wriston's perspectives on education, including various affairs of Brown University, such as the campaign for a new residential area; libraries; and the affect of government actions on students and academic institutions. Some of the writings are Wriston's responses to publications by others about foreign relations and education. There are copies of greetings given by Wriston to the entering classes of Brown University and Pembroke College, various civic organizations, and other groups. The 85th Birthday Publication series (XXII) consists of. compilations by Wriston of his writings. Personal Correspondence, 1915-1937 series (XX) consists primarily of correspondence between Wriston and his parents and letters about early employment opportunities. The Personal Correspondence, ca. 1938-1955 series (XI) includes correspondence with individuals and organizations that were concerned with educational, social and political issues. The Correspondence, New York, 1963-1966 series (IX) consists of files on the following subjects; the Hays bill (H.R.6277); the American Universities Field Staff; Writson's paper, Cuba and the U.S. : An Historian's Perspective; and the Council on Foreign Relations, including a historical overview of Wriston's involvement on the Council. The Correspondence, 1969-1977 (XVIII) series includes primarily personal correspondence; commentary on Wriston's publications and writings; solicitations for his support on various political and educational issues or for individuals; and the Council on Foreign Relations. The Outside Organizations series (II) consists of files that document Wriston's involvement, during his term as Brown President, with educational, professional, and civic organizations including: the Association of American Universities; the Citizen's Emergency Committee; the Council on Foreign Relations; the Foreign Service Committee; the United War Fund; the World Peace Foundation; the Carnegie Corporation, Carnegie Endowment and Carnegie Foundation; Delta Tau Delta Fraternity; Lawrence College; and. Wesleyan University. The American Assembly series (XXI) includes files on various aspects of Wriston's work with the organization, files on various universities and Delta Tau Delta; and biographical and other personal files. The American Assembly correspondence files are incomplete. The Material Used for the Armed Services Manual series (XIII) documents the impact of World War II on colleges and universities. Topics include students in the armed services, the selective service, WAACs, the use of academic facilities for war related efforts, military research contracts, the War Services Advisory Bureau, and the Brown University Manual on Student Miltary Service.
