Sent to America as a Hessian soldier in the Revolution, Scheuber wanted to join the American cause, but could not get a discharge until 1783. He then met with George Washington, hoping for support to found a Hessian colony. As Washington predicted, the venture failed, and eventually Scheuber settled in Savannah.
