Sent to America as a Hessian soldier in the Revolution, Scheuber wanted to join the American cause, but could not get a discharge until 1783. He then met with George Washington, hoping for support to found a Hessian colony. As Washington predicted, the venture failed, and eventually Scheuber settled in Savannah. He became an alderman and justice of the peace, but was still troubled by accusations of disloyalty and desertion.
