Brown University student diaries, 1820- (bulk 1820-1921).

Consists of approximately 35 volumes of diaries and account books created by Brown University students. The diaries date from 1820 to 1921. The diaries describe life at the university, students' activities and expenses, faculty, classroom experiences, Civil War experiences, and religious revivals. The diaries (1861-1865) of Henry Sweetser Burrage include narrative about the Civil War in addition to student life. Reuben Aldridge Guild gives an account of religious revival in 1847 and Elbridge Gerry Howe describes one in 1820. Williams Latham's diaries (1823-1843) describe his pupils in schools in Sutton, Raynham, Northbridge, and Westborough, Mass. In addition to a diary (1854-1863) by Lyman Partridge, there is his account book (1861-1863) with receipts for preaching. Other diarists include George Whitefield Samson (for 1933-1842 and 1879-1880); Benjamin Herbert Hathorne (for 1828-1836); Samuel Abbott Warren (for 1854-1859); and Perry Edson Faunce (for 1917-1919), son of Brown University President William Herbert Perry Faunce. Lafayette Sabine Foster's diary describes one week only in 1825.

Henry S. Burrage was born in Fitchburg, Mass., in 1837. He attended Brown University and entered the Union Army a year after his graduation in 1861, eventually obtaining the rank of major. After the war, he attended Newton Theological Seminary, from which he graduated in 1867. In 1883 he also received a Doctor of Divinity from Brown. During his life, Rev. In 1917 the university established the Brown War Records Bureau, whose intention was to "collect and preserve a record of all Brown men who are serving in the present war". Brown faculty, students and alumni who were in the military were asked to fill out a small card called "Are you in the war?" and to send original letters, clippings or photographs which "have any bearing on the service of Brown men in the war."
