Letter to Andrew Adams regarding the state of affairs of the war. Pierce describes how the army laid seige to Quebec over the winter and applauds the bravery and dedication of the soldiers who fought without pay. He also states that the pay for the army is finally being sent by Congress. Pierce details the horrors of the retreat from Canada and the deplorable state of the troops when they were taken over by General Gates at Fort Ticonderoga. He describes how Gates revitalized the army, restored discipline and obtained reinforcements. The troops rebuilt the old French lines at Fort Ticonderoga and improved Fort Schuyler.
