Jefferson Martenet, emigrant to the California mines in 1852, spent about two years in Jacksonville, then went to San Francisco where he opened a book stand in 1855. He became a clerk in 1857 in the Antiquarian Bookstore, owned by his friends Epes Ellery and Augustus Doyle. From 1866 to 1867, Martenet was associated with Dr. T.W.
