U.S Boundary Commissioner, antiquarian and bibliographer; John Bartlett was appointed in 1850 to establish the border between Mexico and the United States. He worked in Texas and southern New Mexico until 1852, when he decided to go to San Diego and work from there to the east. He was removed from his position in February 1853. C. Hart Merriam was a biologist who work for the Smithsonian Institution from 1910-1939. Merriam was born December 5, 1855 in New York City.
