The collection deals mostly with activities of the union involving banquets, conventions, meetings, Executive and Pension Board activities, and office workers. The collection contains extensive images of Salhaven, a union operated retirement community located in Florida. Other photographs represented include portraits of union leaders Sal B. Hoffmann, William Kohn, and Al Rota; union members at work and strikes.

The Upholsterers International Union (UIU) was formed in 1882, reorganized in 1892, and was chartered by the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in 1900. The UIU represents workers in the furniture, mattress and bedding and casket industries, as well as window trimmers, and display installers. In 1937, due to internal disputes, several UIU locals and an estimated 7500 members split from the union to form the rival United Furniture workers of America.
