The Governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the administering of greetings, congratulations, recommendations, and other responses to constituents, public officials, dignitaries, and citizens of other states seeking information or offering observations. This series consists of correspondence, telegrams, clippings, and publications that document the Governor's relationship with consituents and correspondents from other states. The records also document the Governor's interaction with governors of other states, Congressmen, and other public officials and dignitaries. The files contain letters of condolence, congratulations and thanks; requests for autographs, photographs and contributions; and greetings. Invitations extended to and by Governor James E. (Big Jim) Folsom are included in this series. The records also contain letters of recommendation and requests for and confirmation of appointments to meet with the Governor in his office. Folsom's speeches and statements are also included along with correspondence from constituents requesting copies of speeches. The files contain information regarding the National Governors' Conference and the Southern Governors' Conference. Limited documentation of expenses at the Governor's Mansion is also maintained in these records. Much of the correspondence was answered by O. H. Finney, Jr., Folsom's Executive Secretary, and by Press Secretary Ralph Hammond. These records cover only the first year of Folsom's second administration. The location of the rest of the material is unknown.
