The function of the Academy of Honor is to honor distinguished living citizens of the state of Alabama. This series consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, press releases, programs, invitations, photographs, scrapbooks, and other material. The records contain information on the establishment of the Academy and the procedures by which its function is carried out. The series contains biographical information on the members of the Academy, records of nominations, and voting ballots. Milo B. Howard served as the Academy's first executive secretary. Patricia J. Sweet succeeded him in this capacity. Dr. Emmett B. Carmichael was a correspondent. The Academy's fourteen initial members were: Governor Albert P. Brewer, Governor George C. Wallace, Governor John Patterson, Governor James E. Folsom, Sr., Senator Lister Hill, Senator John Sparkman, Bertha Pizitz Smolian, Dr. Frank A. Rose, Frank P. Samford, Sr., Paul W. Bryant, Dr. A. G. Gaston, Dr. Wernher von Braun, Winton M. Blount, and Admiral Thomas H. Moorer.
