Charles L. Lumsden was originally from Petersburg, Va., attended the Virginia Military Institute, and then became a teacher at the Alabama Military Institute in Tuscaloosa, Ala. During the Civil War Lumsden became the Confederate captain of "Lumsden's Battery".
