The collection contains letters, documents and 3 maps, in English and Spanish, mounted in 39 bound volumes. An additional volume contains a printed introduction to the collection. Subjects covered in the collection include: Edward M. Kern and his activities at Fort Sutter, chiefly between 1846-47; the Bear Flag Revolt and subsequent military actions; Indian insurrections; the establishment of mail service in California; relief of the Donner Party; and Kern's attachment to the 3rd and 4th Frémont Exploring Expeditions. One of the volumes contains engravings of drawings by Edward and his brother, Richard Kern, made during the Simpson and Sitgreaves Expeditions in the region of the Zuni, Little Colorado, Colorado, and Gila Rivers in 1849-53.

James Hervey Simpson was a West Point cadet who served with the Topographical Corps to explore and survey the Green Bay, Wis., area. Joseph Warren Revere, grandson of Paul Revere, was born May 17, 1812, in Boston, Massachusetts. He joined the United States Navy at the age of 14. Edward Meyer Kern was an artist, scientist, and explorer from Philadelphia. In 1845, Edward accepted the position of artist and topographer for John Charles Frémont's third expedition, which was to explore the central route to California. The Frémont expedition merged California Battalion when the Mexican War began, and Edward was made commander of Sutter's Fort. Richard H. Kern was the older brother of Edward Meyer Kern. Richard was also an illustrator and scientist who, like Edward, accompanied the surveyor John C.
