Joseph Warren Revere, grandson of Paul Revere, was born May 17, 1812, in Boston, Massachusetts. He joined the United States Navy at the age of 14. In 1846 he was stationed at the U.S. Military Post at Sonoma, California. In May 1848 Revere left California to go back to the East Coast, but returned that December after hearing the news of the discovery of gold. Revere, besides mining for gold, became a rancher and businessman. In 1851, Revere spent some time as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Mexican army and helped organize its artillery. In 1852 he went back home to Massachusetts. Revere later served as a Brigadier General in the 7th New Jersey Volunteers during the Civil War. He resigned from the army in 1863 after being court-martialed for his actions in the battle of Chancellorsville. He is best known for his books A tour of duty in California (1849) and Keel and saddle : a retrospective of forty years in the military and naval service (1872). Revere died in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1880.
