In 1846 he was stationed at the U.S. Military Post at Sonoma, California. He resigned from the army in 1863 after being court-martialed for his actions in the battle of Chancellorsville. He is best known for his books A tour of duty in California (1849) and Keel and saddle : a retrospective of forty years in the military and naval service (1872). Revere died in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1880.
