Incorporated in the District of Columbia in April, 1904, the Walter Reed Memorial Association was formed to raise $25,000 for two purposes. First, interest accrued from the principal sum would be given to Major Reed's widow and daughter for the duration of their lives. After their deaths the Association would devote the funds to creating a permanent memorial to Reed in the District of Columbia.
