Records of the Treasurer, 1766-1981 (bulk 1820-1930s).

The Accounts of students series is comprised of ledgers of debit and credit which include term bills, tuition, room and board, fuel fees, fees for use of the library, payments to tutors, fines, and steward and servants bills. The Student accounts volumes contain student names and records their absences from prayers, rooms, church, recitations, and the town; and those dating from 1850 to 1889 include accounts of standing in courses. The earlier volumes in the Cash account series are records of cash in and out; some volumes are internally organized by fund name. A number of the properties in the Deeds for university property series were formally owned by members of the Brown and Ives families. The University deeds by property series (bulk dates 1900-1981) includes deeds and related documents for eighty-one properties, most of which are located in Providence, R.I., but others are located in Mass. and the Caribbean. The majority of the properties were bequeathed to the university. The bulk of the Disbursements series dates from 1891 to 1916. The Journals series, for years up to 1863, records information about student accounts but at a more general level than the Accounts of students series. The journals dated after 1866 record funds received and expenses for the entire university. The bulk of the Ledgers series dates from 1851 to 1922. The bulk of the Annual reports series dates from 1821 to 1864. The Receipts series documents expenses incurred throughout the university, including wages and salaries, construction and maintenance, the library, the registrar, commencement, and insurance. The Scholarships series includes records of the scholarship committee, and lists students recipients with their academic grades and activities. The Treasurers' correspondence series includes correspondence, receipts, and related financial papers of university treasurers Nicholas Brown, Moses Brown Ives, Robert Hale Ives, and Marshall Woods. The Treasurers' correspondence contains information about deeds and property transactions; gifts of property, stocks, and funds; subscription payments; purchases of supplies; and erection of buildings. The Term bills series is comprised of individual bills for students.

In 1917 the university established the Brown War Records Bureau, whose intention was to "collect and preserve a record of all Brown men who are serving in the present war".
