Correspondence, invoices, receipts, requisitions, and other personal and military papers (chiefly 1860-1893) of McDonald and others. The collection concerns the Civil War, McDonald's positions as ordnance officer at Vicksburg, Miss., and Fisheries Commissioner, personal visits to Robert E. Lee after the war, the organization and work of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and other matters. Includes family correspondence of McDonald's wife, Mary McCormick McDonald, and his grandfather, A.W. McDonald, an Indian fighter; and of the Reverend Robert T. Berry and the Griggs family, of Virginia. Correspondents include George A. Anderson, John Warwick Daniel, John M. Forbes, Frederick W.M. Hollyday, James Wilson Alexander McDonald, Charles Triplett O'Ferrall, James L. Pugh, William, Lyne Wilson, and George D. Wise.

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870. Lee spent the first twenty-three years of his military career in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
