My life in the army, 1862, / by William McCarter, 1875.

These eleven volumes contain descriptions of William McCarter's experiences in the Civil War and accounts of the campaigns in which he participated. McCarter was a member of the 116th Pennsylvania volunteers ("the Irish Brigade"), which served in 26 battles, listed by location and name in volume 1. McCarter lists the officers killed in battles, notes the names and activities of many soldiers with whom he served, and describes the regiment's activities throughout the war. McCarter describes in great detail food rations they received, methods of cooking and preparing food, routine activities of the regiment, battles, illnesses, and the weather.

William McCarter was born in Derry, Ireland in 1840 or 1841, but resided in Philadelphia with his wife and children by the beginning of the Civil War. Prior to the war, McCarter worked as a currier. After the war, he was plagued by pain from the injuries he received as a soldier. In the 1880s, McCarter moved to Maryland and then Washington, DC. He died in 1911.
