Documents professional experiences of Albert S. Ashmead, American leprologist. Bulk is correspondence with other researchers concerning first International Leprosy Congress, 1897. Includes manuscripts of articles, text of unpublished anthology on Japanese medicine, and research notes and translations of articles on leprosy and anthropology. Manuscripts, primarily concerning leprosy, tuberculosis, and Japan, 1880-1909, in Series 4. Series 5 contains newsclippings and printed material on medical anthropology and leprosy. In 1893, Ashmead assembled translations of German and French articles on leprosy, beri-beri, and Japanese medicine. Many written by Albrecht Wernich; some translated by Ashmead. This compilation is in Series 6. Series 7 contains research files on leprosy and texts, translations, and information on anthropological debate with Rudolf Virchow. Japanese documents, including 1874 history of medicine in Japan and report sent to Ashmead on sickness in the Japanese army, 1874-1875, contained in Series 8.

Albert Sidney Ashmead, leprologist, was born in Philadelphia on 4 Apr. 1850. He married Florence M. Fleming in 1873, then Isabella M. Wale in 1883. Ashmead died after an intestinal operation in Philadelphia on 20 Feb. 1911. Ashmead received an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1869 and practiced medicine until 1873. Dr. Daniel Garrison Brinton (13 May 1837-31 July 1899) was born in Thornbury Township, Chester County, Pa., on "Homestead Farm" to Lewis and Ann (Garrison) Brinton.
