The Railroad Commission functions to supervise and regulate railroads in Alabama. These records consist of letterbooks (also known as letterpress copybooks) containing copies of letters sent by the Railroad Commission. Each letterbook is about one inch thick and nine inches by twelve inches in measurement. Most of these letters are replies made to letters received. Appeals against railroads, matters cocnerning freight and passenger tariffs, requests for rulings by railroads on matters of regulations, railroad routes, railroad safety, and many other matters were discussed in these letters.
