Homestead land records, ca.1869-1927.

The Secretary of State Land Division records all actions regarding the disposition of state lands. In accordance with these duties this office worked closely with the local U.S. Land Offices. This series consists of correspondence and legal documents created by the Huntsville Land Office and the Montgomery Land Office regarding homestead claims on federal land. The majority of the correspondence is between the Montgomery Land Office and the General Land Office in Washington, D.C. There is also considerable correspondence between the Montgomery office and non-official communicants regarding land claims. The most notable state land office officials represented in the records are Montgomery Registers P. J. Anderson, J. H. Bingham, J. G. Harris, and Thomas J. Scott; Receivers John C. Leftwich and P. J. Strobach; Huntsville Register John M. Cross; and Receivers P. J. Kaufman and William H. Tancre.
