The land office later known as the Huntsville Land Office was created by an act of 1807 Mar. 3 and was established at Nashville, Tenn. on 1810 July 27. The office was moved to Twickenham, Miss. Territory on 1811 Feb. 11, though Twickenham changed its name to Huntsville on 1811 Nov. 25. The land sold out of this office is situated in what are now the Ala. counties or portions of the counties of Bibb, Blount, Colbert, Cullman, Fayette, Franklin, Greene, Jackson, Jefferson, Lamar, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Morgan, St. Clair, Shelby, Tuscaloosa, Walker, and Winston. In 1820 counties in the southern portion of the district were transferred to the Tuscaloosa Land Office. The Huntsville Land Office later absorbed land originally located in the Mardisville and Centre Land Districts. The Huntsville Land Office was closed and its records transferred to the Montgomery Land Office on 1905 Mar. 1.
