This collection contains the personal papers of Walter S. Carpenter. Correspondence files consist primarily of letters to family, friends, and business associates. There is some correspondence with Carpenter's colleagues at the Du Pont Company which describe his career and business activities. Letters to family mostly concern personal matters (trips abroad, contributions to charity, and the education of his children). The collection also documents Carpenter's personal finances, investments, land sales, and the establishment of trust accounts for his children. Contribution files trace his continuing interest in Cornell University, the University of Delaware, and the Republican National Committee.

Walter S. Carpenter, Jr., was born in Wilkes Barre, Pa., on January 8, 1888. He graduated from Wyoming Seminary in 1906 and entered Cornell University.
