Wilcox was born in Middlebury, Ohio (January 4, 1847), the son of David G. and Hannah (Whitney) Wilcox. He was educated in the public schools and at Dennison College, Granville, Ohio, and came to Minneapolis (1867), where he was employed by and later became head of Wheaton, Reynolds and Francis (1867-1885), manufacturers of sash, doors, and related products.
