Papers, 1821-1894.

Consists of Ann Eliza Reed's diploma from the Wesleyan Female Collegiate Institute, a printed sheet with "A Parting Hymn" from the school, 24 drawings and watercolors done by Ann when she was a student, and an engraving of two buildings (probably the institute). Also included in the collection are a newspaper cut out of William Henry Harrison; an engraving, "The May Queen," from an issue of Graham's Magazine; a copy of Charlotte Murray's "Christmas Wishes," printed by Raphael Tuck in 1894, sent to Ann from her niece; "The Family's Guide: Comprising a Choice Variety of very Useful Recipes in Domestic Economy," 1833, owned by the Reed family; and the family's copy of Vol. III of Francis Asbury's journals. Finally, there is a copy of "The Star in the East," Vol. 1, No. 1, October 5, 1853, which was a temperance news paper.

Francis Asbury (1745-1816) was one of the first two bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States. Born in England, he came to America in 1771; in 1784 he, with Thomas Coke, was named the head of the Methodist Church in America. There is a statue to his memory in Washington, DC, and in many towns and cities across America one may find an Asbury United Methodist Church. Ann Eliza Reed was born in 1824 to the Rev. Eliphalet Reed (1792-1863) and Mary Throckmorton (1800-1869). Her father was an itinerant preacher in the Methodist Episcopal Church in the tradition of Bishop Francis Asbury. Ann attended the Wesleyan Female Collegiate Institute, Wilmington, De. and graduated in 1841.
