Ann Eliza Reed was born in 1824 to the Rev. Eliphalet Reed (1792-1863) and Mary Throckmorton (1800-1869). Her father was an itinerant preacher in the Methodist Episcopal Church in the tradition of Bishop Francis Asbury. Ann attended the Wesleyan Female Collegiate Institute, Wilmington, De. and graduated in 1841. A year later she married Dr. Robert Bowes; he died in a horse and buggy accident after they had been married for twenty years. Ann died in 1903; she had no children.
