Letterbook, 1833-1839.

The Joseph Bancroft letter book describes the early stages of the Bancroft mill operation, dimensions and details of equipment ordered, difficulties encountered in installations, and bales of textiles sent out to various customers. It includes correspondence with several important builders of textile machinery. A letter of February 2, 1838, gives particulars of flood damage.

The surge of investment that filled the Anthracite region of northeastern Pennsylvania in the mid-1700s did not reach the Lehigh Valley until 1791 when coal was found near Summit Hill, west of Mauch Chunk, leading to the formation of the Lehigh Coal Mines Company.
