Nine of these items are letters from Private George R. Richardson, Company I, 20th Regiment of Virginia Infantry, to his father or mother in Brunswick County. The remaining three items are letters to Richardson's family from Captain Joseph Jones, commander of Company I, R.L. Chichy, who served with Richardson, and Caroline E. Mayo, nurse in a private hospital in Richmond where Richardson died in September, 1861, at age 19.

The Richardson family resided in Brunswick County, Virginia. George R. Richardson, son of Amos and Mary, enrolled for active service in the Confederate Army at Trotter's Store, 3 June 1861, and was mustered into service in Company I, 20th Regiment of Virginia Infantry ("Brunswick Blues"), at Richmond, 5 June 1861.
