Davis Family Papers, 1835-1913.

This collection consists of the correspondence of Jefferson and Varina Howell Davis. Topics include Mississippi and national politics; the admission of California as a state; a proposed southern-route transcontinental railroad; and Davis' capture at the end of the Civil War. It also contains speeches, newsclippings about the Davises and their home, and accounts of the Battle of Monterey (1846), requested by Davis.

Jefferson Davis graduated from West Point in 1828 and served in the Army for seven years. In 1847 he was elected to the U.S. Senate, and he remained in public office until 1861 and the secession of the southern states.
