Consists of correspondence between Brown University students and between students and their friends, families, and others. University related subjects discussed in the letters include commencement, the curriculum, fraternities and societies, and student life and customs. Other subjects discussed in the letters include choices of various professions, including medicine, law, and the ministry; religion and church activities; politics; and social activities. Letters by Henry Hilliard Earl and Emery H. Porter often mention events and people in Fall River, Mass. Letters to Melancthon Storrs discuss medical schools and medicine as a profession as well as Storrs family life. There are also letters by Eli Thayer, Frederick Phillips Craig, and Ratcliffe Hicks.

In 1917 the university established the Brown War Records Bureau, whose intention was to "collect and preserve a record of all Brown men who are serving in the present war". Brown faculty, students and alumni who were in the military were asked to fill out a small card called "Are you in the war?" and to send original letters, clippings or photographs which "have any bearing on the service of Brown men in the war."
